This Western Bluebird carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Western Bluebird is about seven inches long. The colorful male's upperparts and throat are a deep purple-blue with chestnut breast, sides and flanks. The Belly and undertail converts are grayish. Most of these birds show some chestnut on the shoulders and upper back. The female is a duller, brownish gray above with a pale gray throat and the breast and flanks are tinged with chestnut. Nesting in hosts in trees and posts as well as in accommodating nest boxes, the Western Bluebird is common in woodlands, farmlands, orchards. It is often found in mesquite-mistletoe groves in desert areas during the winter time. Reference National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds of North America, Fifth Edition, Page 354
