Extinct Carolina Parakeet
This Extinct Carolina Parakeet carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The extinct Carolina Parakeet was the only native, breeding North American Psittacid. Formerly resident in the Southeast, especially along rivers. The last certain, sighting records were in Florida and Kansas in 1904; a reliable sight record from Missouri in 1905 and perhaps another in 1912. The last-known Carolina Parakeet captive died on February 21, 1918. The adult Carolina Parakeet had a green body with yellow patches on the shoulder, thighs and vent, a yellow head, and a reddish orange face. The immature was entirely green, except for an orange patch on the forehead. Reference National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds of North America, Fifth Edition, Page 472
