This Bengalese Finch carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The males and females of the Bengalese Finch (also known as Society Finch) are basically identical in appearance. The only way to easily distinguish them is by their behavior. Whereas the females very rarely sing, the males sing often while bouncing back and forth on the perch and approaching the female. The Bengalese Finch are very sociable and easy to breed. The Society Finch has been raised by the Chinese and Japanese for hundreds of years. It was probably first cage bred by the Chinese who later brought it to Japan.
