This Cut-throat Finch carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. Native to south of the Sahara in Africa, the Cut-throat Finch is also known as the Cut-throat Weaver and is sometimes called a Ribbon Finch. This bird is a rather solidly-built Waxbill with a broad head, sturdy bill and possesses plumage that is predominantly different shades of brown with a complex pattern of spots and bars. The feathers are a pinkish, sandy-fawn with black markings. The throat is white and the tail brownish-black tipped with white. The male of the species is easily distinguished by his distinctive, broad, blood-red band across his throat and a rich, brown patch on the belly spotted with white at the edges.
