15-inch, Life-sized Red-shouldered Hawk
This 15-inch, Life-sized Red-shouldered Hawk carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. Juvenile Red-shouldered Hawks subspecies show extensive variations in color lineatus shows more finely streaked breast and more closely resembles the juvenile Broad-winged Hawk; other eastern races show more coarsely marked under parts; elegans is quite dark and has more adult-like features, including some rufous on shoulders and wing linings. The flight of all ages of elegans is accipter-like, with several quick wing beats and a glide, while lineatus flies with slower wing beats, more like that of the Broad-winged Hawk.
