This 15-inch, Life-sized Prairie Falcon carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Prairie Falcon is pale-brown above and creamy-white and heavily spotted below. Other features include a brown crown, dark moustachial stripe, and broad pale area below and behind the eyes. The facial markings are narrower and the plumage of the Prairie Falcon is paler overall than that of the Peregrine Falcon. In flight, all ages show distinctive, dark axillaries and a dark bar on wing lining which is broader on females. The juvenile is streaked below and darker above with a bluish cere. Preys chiefly on birds and small mammals and inhabits dry, open country and prairies. Reference National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds of North America, Fifth Edition, Page 140
