This 17-inch, life-sized Passenger Pigeon carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. Resembling a large Mourning Dove, the adult male Passenger Pigeon (now extinct) was bluish-gray above and pinkish below. The female was browner above and paler below. Believed to have been the most abundant bird species in North America, migration flocks are said to have numbered in the millions. The destruction of old-growth deciduous forests and over hunting, especially in breeding colonies, led to its demise.
