Yellow-headed Blackbird (Open Wing)
This open-winged, Yellow-headed Blackbird carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. Juvenile Yellow-headed Blackbirds are dark-brown with buffy edgings on the back and wing and the head is mostly tawny. The immature male resembles the female but is darker and the wing coverts are tipped with white. The Yellow-headed Blackbird acquires its full adult plumage by the following Fall. The species prefers freshwater marshes or reedy lakes. It is often seen foraging in nearby farmlands. Reference National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds of North America, Fifth Edition, Page 444
