This 9 Racing Pigeon carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Racing Pigeon, also sometimes known as "Homing Pigeon", or "Carrier Pigeon" is a carfully bred domestic pigeon, especially trained to find their way home from places they have never been before. Historically used by military forces for communications, hence the term, "Pigeon Post", whereby a message is written on a small, thin piece of paper, such as a cigarette paper. The message is then place in a small tube which is attached to the pigeon's leg before the pigeon is released.
