Piping Plover

Piping Plover

This Piping Plover carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Piping Plover is very pale above with orange legs and a white rump that is conspicuous in flight. In breeding plumage, it shows a dark, narrow breast band usually complete in circumcinctus, sometimes incomplete, especially in females and paler-faced East Coast birds. In Winter, the bill is all-dark. The Piping Plover can be distinguished from the Snowy Plover by the thicker bill and paler back of the Piping. The legs are brighter than in the Semipalmated Plover. The distinctive call of the Piping Plover is a clear peep-lo. Found on sandy beaches, lakeshores, and dunes. Piping Plover is an endangered species and generally uncommon to find.
