This Black Oystercatcher carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. Oystercatchers are chunky shorebirds with laterally flattened, heavy bills that can reach into mollusks and pry the shells open. They also will probe the sand for worms and crabs. the Black Oystercatcher has a large, red-orange bill, an all-dark body and pinkish legs. On immatures, the outer half of the bill is dusky during the first year. Resident on rocky shores and islands along the Pacific coast.
