This Purple Martin carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The male Purple Martin is a dark, glossy, purplish-blue. The female and juvenile are gray below. First-Spring males have some purple below. In flight, the male especially resembles the European Starling, but the Purple Martin has a forked tail, longer wings, and typical swallow flight, short glides alternating with rapid flapping. Locally common where suitable nest sites are available, the Purple Martin is declining over much of North America, especially in the Pacific states.
