This Hoary Redpoll carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Hoary Redpoll closely resembles the Common Redpoll but is usually frostier and paler overall with a slightly smaller bill. Also the streaking below and on the rump are minimal or absent. The male's breast is usually paler and pinker than on the Common Redpoll and the color does not extend to the cheeks or sides. The calls and song are similar to the Common. The species is fairly common and nests on or near the ground above the Arctic tree line.
