This Hepatic Tanager carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The breeding, male Hepatic Tanager is generally dark to orange-red with a gray wash on his back and flanks. In addition to a gray-red patch on his cheek and a slightly hooked dark bill, his legs and feet are also gray. He likes to feed high up in trees in Pine and Pine-Oak forests and sometimes will catch insects in midair. Breeding from the southwestern areas of the United States to Mexico, he spends his winters south of the U.S. / Mexico border.
