This Varied Bunting carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. During the breeding season, the male Varied Bunting's plumage is colorful in good light, otherwise it tends to appear black. In Winter time, his colors are edged with brown. The female is plain gray-brown or buffy-brown above and slightly paler below. Commonly found in thorny thickets in washes and canyons, often near water. Reference National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds of North America, Fifth Edition, Page 440
