Red-winged Blackbird
This Red-winged Blackbird carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The first-year, male plumage of the Red-winged Blackbird is distinguished from the female Tri-colored by reddish shoulder patch. Males in races of California's Central Valley and central coast region normally lack the buffy band behind the red shoulder patch. Known collectively as the "Bi-colored Blackbird", females have darker bellies, more like female Tri-colored. Note the presence of a chestnut-buff edging on feathers of the upper-parts, except when worn away. The Red-winged Blackbird also has more rounded wings and stouter bill.
