Life-sized Boreal Owl
This Life-sized Boreal Owl carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The white under-parts of the Boreal Owl are streaked with chocolate-brown and the whitish, facial disk has a distinct, black border. The bill is pale and the Boreal is darker above than the Northern Saw-wet Owl. The juvenile is chocolate-brown below. Boreal Owls are strictly nocturnal and roost during the daylight in dense cover, usually close to the tree trunk. The call, heard primarily in the breeding season from late Winter to mid-Spring is a short, rapid series of hollow hoo notes. The Boreal Owl inhabits dense northern forests and muskeg. Irruptive, usually in small numbers; otherwise its seldom seen south of its normal range, but this may be due to the difficulty of locating them. The species breeds at isolated locations high in the Rocky Mountains. Reference National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds of North America, Fifth Edition, Page 264
