6.25-inch Flammulated Owl
This 6.25-inch Flammulated Owl carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Flammulated Owl has dark eyes, small ear tufts that are often indistinct and a variegated red-and-gray plumage. Birds in the northwestern part of the range are the most finely marked; those in the Great Basin mountains are grayish and have the coarsest markings; and those breeding in the Southeast are reddish. Strictly nocturnal, the Flammulated Owl nests and roosts in tree cavities, usually old woodpecker holes. Best located at night by its call, a series of single or paired low, hoarse, hollow hoots. Commonly found in Oak and Pine woodlands, especially Ponderosa Pine. sometimes nests in loose colonies. Highly migratory.
