This 7.25-inch Whiskered Screech Owl carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Whiskered-Screech Owl closely resembles the gray Western Screech-Owl but is slightly smaller with smaller feet and usually bolder cross barring, similar to the Eastern. Identification is best done by voice. The Whiskered-Screech Owl has two common calls: a series of short whistles on one pitch and at a fairly even tempo; and a series of very irregular hoots, like Morse code. The species is nocturnal and inhabits dense Oak and Oak-conifer woodlands at elevations from 4,000 to 6,000 feet, but mostly found around 5,000 feet. Generally found at higher elevations than the Western Screech Owl. Reference National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds of North America, Fifth Edition, Page 260
