This 10-inch Gryfalcon carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Gryfalcon is heavily built with its wings being broader based than in other falcons. The adult has a yellow-orange eye ring, cere, and legs (bluish gray in juveniles). The broad, tapered tail may be barred or unbarred; in perched birds, the tail extends far beyond the wing tips, unlike other falcons. Plumages vary from a white morph to a gray morph to a dark morph, with paler gray morphs intermediate between typical gray and white. The Facial markings range from none on the white morph to all-dark cheeks on the dark morph. Juveniles of the white and gray morphs are much browner above; juveniles of the gray and dark morphs show darker wing linings and paler flight feathers. Gryfalcons inhabit the open tundra near rocky outcroppings and cliffs. It flies with slow, powerful wing beats, preying chiefly on birds.
