This 7.5-inch Great Egret carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Great Egret is a large white heron with a heavy, yellow bill, blackish legs and feet. In breeding plumage, long plumes trail from the back, extending beyond the tail. In immatures and non-breeding adults, the bill and leg colors are duller and the plumes are absent. The Great Egret can be distinguished from most other white herons by its large size; from the white morph of the larger Great Blue Heron by the black legs and feet. Commonly found in wetlands, the species is partial to open habitats for feeding; it normally stalks its prey very slowly and methodically.
