This 11-inch Blue Heron carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Great Blue Heron is a large, gray-blue heron with a black stripe which extends above the eyes and a white foreneck which is streaked with black. The breeding adult has a yellowish bill and ornate plumes on the head, neck and back. Non-breeding adults lack the plumes and the bill is yellower. Juvenile have a black crown and no plumes. An all-white morph, the "Great White Heron" found in southern Florida was formerly considered a separate species.
