This 8.5-inch American Avocet carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. Avocets are sleek and graceful waders with long, slender bills and spindly legs. The American Avocet is black-and-white above with white below. The head and neck are rusty when in breeding plumage and gray in the Winter. Juveniles have cinnamon wash on the head and neck. Avocets feed by sweeping their bills from side to side through the water. The male's bill is longer and straighter than the female's. The common call is a loud wheet. Fairly commonly found on shallow ponds, marshes and lakeshores. Reference National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds of North America, Fifth Edition, Page 160
