This Horned Puffin carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Horned Puffin is a stocky, North Pacific species with a thick neck, large head, massive bill and underparts that are white in all plumages. The breeding adult's face is white and the bill is brightly colored. The dark, fleshy "horn" extending up from the eyes is visible only at close range. The Winter adult's bill is smaller, duller and the face is dusky. The bill of the juvenile and first-Winter birds is smaller and duskier than adults. The full adult bill takes several years to develop. The bright orange legs are conspicuous in flight. The wings are rounded, wing linings are grayish and the wings lack white trailing edge. Locally common, the Horned Puffin spends it Winters well out to sea. Reference National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds of North America, Fifth Edition, Page 240
