7-inch Green Heron
This 7-inch Green Heron carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Green Heron is a small, chunky heron with short legs. The back and sides of the adult's neck are a deep chestnut. The green on the upper-parts is mixed with blue-gray. The center of the throat and neck are white. Greenish-black crown feathers are sometimes raised to form a shaggy crest. The legs are usually dull-yellow but in male will turn bright-orange in high breeding plumage. The common call is a loud, sharp kyowk. When alarmed, it raises its crest and flicks its tail. Usually solitary, the Green Heron can be found in a variety of habitats, but prefers streams, ponds, and marshes with a woodland cover. It often perches in trees.
