This 9-inch Belted Kingfisher carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. Both sexes of the Belted Kingfisher have a slate blue breast band, white belly and undertail coverts. The female has a rust belly band and flanks and may be confused with the female Ringed Kingfisher. The call is a loud, dry rattle. The species is common in virtually the entire lower forty-eight states and Canada and is conspicuous along rivers and brooks, ponds, lakes, and estuaries. The species is generally solitary.
