This Green Kingfisher carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Green Kingfisher is the smallest of our Kingfishers and has an inconspicuous crest. The male is green above, with a white collar and white below with dark green spotting. The female has a band of green spots. One call is a faint but sharp tick tick which often ends in a short rattle; another, squeaky cheep, is given in flight. Often perches on low, sheltered branches. The flight is direct and very fast and the white outer tail feathers are conspicuous in flight. Uncommon and often hard to see, the species is a resident of the lower Rio Grande Valley.
