This Steller's Jay carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Steller's Jay is crested with a dark blue and blue and black overall coloring. The coloration varies slightly between races with some having darker backs and bluish streaks on forehead. Others have a long crest with a paler back, white streaks on forehead and white marks over the eyes. Still another race is almost entirely black above. Steller's Jays are commonly found in pine-oak woodlands and coniferous forests. Reference National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds of North America, Fifth Edition, Page 320
