Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Open wing)
This open-winged, ruby-throated Hummingbird carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. Some immature Ruby-throated Hummingbird males begin to show a red spotting on the throat by early fall. As with all hummingbirds, the adult males migrate earlier than the females and immatures. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are fairly common and often found in gardens and woodland edges. Very similar in appearance with the Black-chinned Hummingbirds, females and immatures of these two species are almost indistinguishable. The Ruby-throated generally has a greener crown, shorter bill, darker face and more pointed shape of the darker primaries, especially the outermost ones.
