This Rufous Hummingbird carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The tail of the Rufous Hummingbird is mainly rufous, hence its name. The adult male has a rufous back, sometimes marked with green, but very rarely entirely green, and an orange-red gorget. Immature males may show a reddish-brown back by winter before acquiring the full gorget. With a buzzy wing whistle, the calls include a sibilant chip, often given in a series. The chase note is zeee-chuppity-chup. Rarely seen in fall over much of the East. Reference National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds of North America, Fifth Edition, Page 278
