Anna's Hummingbird

Anna's Hummingbird

This Anna's Hummingbird carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The adult male Anna's Hummingbird's head and throat are deep-rosy red with the color extending a short distance onto the sides of the neck. The female's throat usually shows red flecks, often forming a patch of color. In both sexes the under-parts are grayish, washed with varying amounts of green. The bill is disproportionately short. Immatures resemble the female with the immature male usually showing some red on the crown. Juveniles lack the red on the throat. The common call note is a sharp chick. The chase call is a rapid, dry rattling. The male's song is a jumble of high squeaks and raspy notes. Abundantly found in coastal lowlands and mountains as well as in deserts, especially in the winter.
