Hooded Oriole

This Hooded Oriole carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The bill of the Hooded Oriole is long and slightly curved. The breeding male is orange or orange-yellow with a black patch on the throat. All winter adult males have buffy-brown tips on the back forming a barred pattern. Hooded female and immature male lack the pale belly of Bullock's Oriole and the bill is more curved. Immature male acquires the black patch on the throat by Winter. Calls include a whistled, rising wheet. The song is a series of whistles, trills and rattles. Common in varied habitats, especially near palms.
