Tufted Puffin

This Tufted Puffin carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Tufted Puffin is stocky with a thick neck, large head and massive bill. The under-parts are dark in adults. The breeding adult's face is white, the bill is brightly colored and the pale yellow head-tufts droop over the back of the neck. The winter adult has a smaller, duller bill with a gray face and the tufts are shorter or absent. Juvenile Tufted Puffins have a smaller, dusky bill, dark eyes and white or dark under-parts. First-Winter bird looks like the juvenile until their spring molt. As in other Puffins, the full, adult bill and plumage take several years to develop. Red-orange feet are conspicuous in flight; wings are rounded; wing linings are grayish and the wings lack the trailing edge.
