This 6-inch Semipalmated Plover carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The dark back distinguishes the Semipalmated Plover from the Piping and Snowy Plovers. The bill is much smaller than in Wilson's Plover. At very close range, Semipalmated shows a partial webbing between the toes. The breeding male often lacks the white above the eye and shows an orangish eyering. Juvenile has darker legs than adults. The distinctive call is a whistled, up slurred chu-weet. The song is a series of the same. Commonly found on beaches, lakeshores and tidal flats. Reference National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds of North America, Fifth Edition, Page 156
