This Woodcock carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The American Woodcock is chunky with a long bill, barred crown, large eyes set high in the head and rounded wings. The species is nocturnal and secretive. It flies up abruptly, the wings making a twittering sound. Males give an elaborate flight display. Visible at dusk and dawn, the call, heard mainly in the spring is a nasal peent. Commonly found, the species likes to nest in moist woodlands.
