9.50-inch California Quail

This 9.50-inch California Quail carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The California Quail is gray and brown above, with a prominent teardrop-shaped plume or double plume. The scaled under-parts, brown sides and crown separate the California from Gambel's Quail. The body color varies from grayish, seen over most of its range to brown in the coastal mountains of California. The male has a pale forehead, black throat, and a chestnut patch on the belly. The calls include varied grunts and cackles; the loud, emphatic chi-ca-go call is similar to Gambel's Quail but lower pitched and usually has three notes rather than four. Commonly found in open woodlands, brushy foothills, stream valleys and suburbs, usually near a permanent water source.
