Chestnut-backed Chickadee

This Chestnut-backed Chickadee carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. Measuring four inches long, the Chestnut-backed Chickadee has a sooty brown cap, white cheeks and a black bib with a chestnut back and rump. Over most of its range, this species has bright chestnut sides and flanks. The sub-species found south of the Golden Gate Bridge on the Central California cost shows almost no chestnut below. Found in coniferous forests and deciduous woodlands, it usually feeds high up in trees.
