This European Goldfinch carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The physical appearance of both the male and female European Goldfinch is very similar, with a red face, black and snowy white head, brown and white breast upperparts and black wings with yellow flares. The male may have more red on his head and seem slightly larger overall with a more pointed beak than the female. The female often has browner wings and a browner rump, as well as a more narrow and paler yellow band across the wings. This species has several other common names including: Goldfinch, Himalayan Goldfinch, Gray-crowned Goldfinch, British Goldfinch, Eastern Goldfinch, Eurasian Goldfinch, European Goldfinch. The species ranges throughout Europe, northern Africa and most of Asia. In recent years, they have also been spotted in and around Eastern portions of the United States and Northern Canada.
