This Dickcissel carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. Distinctive markings of the Dickcissel include a yellowish eyebrow, thick bill, and chestnut wing coverts. The breeding male has a black bib under his white chin and a bright yellow breast. The female lacks the black bib, but has some yellow on her breast as well as a muted, chestnut wing patch. The Dickcissel's common call, often given in flight, is a distinctive electric-buzzer bzrrrrt. The song is a variable dick dick dickcissel. The species breeds in open weedy meadows, grain fields and prairies. Reference National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds of North America, Fifth Edition, Page 438
