Summer Tanager

Summer Tanager

This Summer Tanager carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. The Summer Tanager is considered to be the only entirely red bird in North America. Perhaps it is best known for its practice and skill at catching bees and wasps in mid-flight. After catching a bee, the bird will beat the bee against a branch to kill it and then rub it on the branch to remove the stinger before eating it.
