This Mini (7-inch) Female Ivory-billed Woodpecker carving was hand-crafted from solid Basswood. Female Ivory-billed Woodpeckers have black crests rather than red like the male sex. As seen from below the Ivory-billed Woodpecker in flight, the white leading edge and the white secondaries are divided by a black bar; viewed from above, the white secondaries are diagnostic. The flight of the Ivory-billed is more direct and swift than that of the Pileated Woodpecker. Reference National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds of North America, Fifth Edition, Page 292
